Milpark Helps Luthando Msomi Progress – One Qualification at a Time

Luthando is undeniably a go-getter. Her mantra is to continue upskilling! “Everything I take an interest in; I find a qualification to build on those skills more.”

Her advice to others is to be in a “classroom” as often as you can, be it for PhD’s, Degrees, or even short courses online: “Take every opportunity there is to upskill yourself, to develop yourself. The world is changing quite significantly and so you can never have enough knowledge. I think everyone that has the opportunity to find themselves in a learning space, should take it with both hands because it will always be to their benefit in whatever skill at whatever level.”

Alas, it has not been all smooth sailing for Luthando. She had to relocate, learn to blend into different spaces and business environments, as well as balance her studies, parenting and work – which has been undoubtedly challenging. She has had to build a whole new life from scratch. “I’ve gotten married here, I have a child here… I started a life here. My family still lives in Durban.”

But her determination and drive to want to align her skills to her interests kept her motivated and grounded, even when the waters were rough. “It is not easy, I am not going to lie, it is longer nights but I was able to manage this programme. Online learning is very convenient. It worked well for my lifestyle, for my family and employer as well.”

Since her daughter was born, Luthando has been very busy navigating through different courses over the last 5 years. “Since my daughter was around one, I’ve been in some sort of studies. I know I’m destined for more, and the only way to prepare is to have a skill set aligned with what’s required. I try as often as I can to have some sort of passion, some sort of project. I also do a lot of charity work, so I will do a lot of research on how to do that.”

She is especially passionate about uplifting communities. “I’m from a township in Durban. I wanted to learn how to approach community work in a way where people don’t feel less than. So, I did a course in Community Development too.”

Luthando has never stopped learning. She strongly advocates for educational growth, especially for women given the reality many face. “The expectation is for you to know way more than your male counterpart in order to stand out. Being exposed to different institutions also benefits you.”

Currently her heart is being tugged back to corporate communication. “My goal is to find my way back to corporate communication. This qualification assisted me in the business management aspect of things. I would like to find myself back in executive, but more on the corporate communication side.”

The Higher Certificate in Management has helped her merge both her previous qualification and skills into business management. Now her academic ship is not staying docked for long, she plans to sail on to the next qualification. Luthando has applied to Milpark Education for a Postgraduate Diploma in Business Administration. Once she completes that, she is steering straight towards a Master’s degree in Leadership. With determination in her voice Luthando said: “I still have a long way to go.”

Her journey proves that there is always a way to upskill oneself. Reflecting on her childhood, she described it jokingly “Passionate but poor”. While already ticking off many academic goals – Luthando continues to do so.
