I was privileged to attend the Institute of Risk Management South Africa’s conference this year, thanks to an invitation extended by Milpark Education. Attending the conference was an invaluable experience, as a claims professional and a student pursuing a Postgraduate Diploma in Risk Management

The conference was an opportunity that I could not miss, it formed the basis of thought-provoking discussions about the evolving risk landscape and offered a chance to bridge the gap between practical insights and theory in real-time, which is a strong focus on the qualification.

The conference’s theme, "IN ACTION: Managing the Risks to Secure a Sustainable Future," highlighted the importance of using proactive strategies and collaboration to manage risks, which are vital for companies that aim to achieve social, economic and environmental long-term sustainability.

Adapting to a Complex World: The Need for Future Fit risk Managers

The message that stood out for me is that risk managers must be "future fit," in terms of their mindset and skills to adapt to our complex and uncertain world. This aligns perfectly with my academic journey, as the modules focus on foresight, strategic thinking and adaptability in risk management.

The event provided keynote sessions by visionary leaders discussing the global challenges that are shaping the risk landscape and breakaway sessions that focused the emerging threats such as climate change, cyber risk and compliance issues.

I enjoyed the case studies, which showcased practical, actionable solutions that some companies are already making use of. The collaborative panels and workshops also allowed me to engage with experts and peers, unpacking concepts and real-world case studies that I am learning in my qualification.

Connecting Sustainability and AI: Key Insights from the Institute of Risk Management Conference

A key focus on sustainability is what connected the experience to my studies at Milpark Education. Knowing that my qualification is fully online and paperless—contributing to environmental sustainability— made me feel like I am part of an organisation that wants to make a difference.

Much of the discussions were centred around artificial intelligence and how the tools must be used as enablers in risk management, which made me appreciate that Milpark is ahead of the curve, especially with its AI-specific modules that provide students with forward-thinking skills.

The Institute of Risk Management South Africa conference will always be a key milestone in my professional and academic journey, as it confirms that my current qualification is equipping me with the tools and knowledge needed to meet the challenges of the future head-on.
