In the fast-paced and ever-changing world in which we live, effective financial planning is imperative for securing a stable and prosperous future. Many career options exist in this field, including those of an administrative nature and fiduciary expert and financial planner/adviser roles.

Whether you're guiding clients towards sound investment decisions or helping them secure their financial future, a career in financial planning offers immense opportunities for growth and impact.

In South Africa, numerous courses are available for prospective financial professionals – from entry-level NQF 5 courses that establish the foundations of giving financial advice, to the flagship Postgraduate Diploma in Financial Planning course, which is a prerequisite to register for the prestigious CFP® certification.

This combination of theoretical knowledge and practical experience ensures that graduates are well-prepared to navigate the complexities of the modern financial landscape. Whether you're at the beginning of your financial planning journey or looking to enhance your qualifications, the education available at Milpark Education will equip you with the skills needed to succeed.

Why Financial Planning Matters

After your health, your finances are arguably the most important determinant of a fulfilled life. Without good health and the necessary finances, the struggle to fulfil your potential is much harder, though by no means impossible. Sufficient finance enables you to take care of your family, pursue studies, and grasp the opportunities that come your way.

Financial planning professionals assist individuals and businesses in making informed financial decisions to protect their wealth by structuring their finances and using appropriate risk-mitigating financial products. They also provide advice on how to grow your wealth.

Certified Financial Planner Course: a Path to Professional excellence

The Postgraduate Diploma in Financial Planning is one of the most recognised qualifications in the industry. It is a challenging qualification, designed to equip aspiring professionals with cutting-edge knowledge, expertise and critical thinking skills to guide clients with the most complex financial portfolios through the maze of an ever-evolving financial environment.

Offered by an accredited provider, such as Milpark Education, it meets the qualification requirement of the Certified Financial Planner® (CFP®) designation.

Successfully completing the qualification is also an entry requirement to the Financial Planning Institute’s Professional Competency Examination (PCE). Until the end of 2024 candidates were required to pass the PCE before being able to register as a CFP® professional.

Transition from PCE to Capstone Course

Starting in 2025, the Financial Planning Institute (FPI) of Southern Africa will replace the PCE with a so-called “Capstone course”, as part of the CFP® certification requirements. The final case study examination administered by the various financial planning education providers, such as Milpark Education, will serve as the standard setting exam that tests a student’s theoretical framework.

This shift aims to provide a more practical component to the FPI certification process, which will ensure that prospective candidates are sufficiently prepared for real-world scenarios.

Key Features of the Capstone course

  • Duration: the Capstone course will be an 8–10 week online program.
  • Content: a combination of live sessions, videos and reading material will be presented to participants, who will also be required to complete assessments.
  • Practical application: the course will culminate in the writing of a comprehensive financial plan for a fictitious client, enabling candidates to apply their knowledge in a real-world scenario
